A Guide to Anthropogenic Biomes of the World (v1)

Anthropogenic Biomes (Anthromes) offer a new way to understand our living planet by describing the way humans have reshaped its ecological patterns and processes.  This guide is based on a system of 21 Anthrome classes divided into 6 broad groups, as described in Ellis and Ramankutty (2008; Anthromes v1)

Anthromes Web Map

1. Urban

       11. Urban        41. Residential Rangelands
       12. Dense Settlements          42. Populated Rangelands

2. Villages

         43. Remote Rangelands
       21. Rice Villages

5. Forested

       22. Irrigated Villages          51. Populated Forests
       23. Cropped & Pastoral Villages          52. Remote Forests
       24. Pastoral Villages

6. Wildlands

       25. Rainfed Villages          61.  Wild Forest
       26. Rainfed Mosaic Villages          62. Sparse Trees

3. Croplands

         63. Barren
       31. Residential Irrigated Cropland
       32. Residential Rainfed Mosaic Cropland
       33. Populated Irrigated Cropland
       34. Populated Rainfed Cropland
       35. Remote Cropland

Note: Anthrome number codes = broad group number & anthrome number.  Example: Dense Settlements = 1 & 2 = 12.
